| My work is rooted in my practice of meditation. It is an attempt to experience samadhi, which is a state in which the mind is absorbed in intense concentration and where the essential nature of the self can be experienced. As Master Dogen Zenji, founder of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism, wrote “Seeing forms with the whole body and mind, hearing sounds with the whole body and mind, one understands them intimately”. To be intimate is to be the thing itself, there is no separation. No separation of body, mind, tools or materials. In intimacy there is no internal dialogue that constantly evaluates, compares or judges. Free from distractions and goals, the “witness” disappears and my work can begin it’s attempt to express true awareness.

Our Mission
It is our commitment to create an environment where professional artists can thrive in their work and their career in the arts, and to establish a place where gallerists, curators, collectors, writers, designers and architects, will find high-quality, fresh and progressive ideas in art. We achieve this by carefully selecting our artists, encouraging their input and supporting their interaction to ensure a better experience while at Juvenal Reis Studios. We continuously create and implement new projects to interact with the greater community of Long Island City through artist talks, workshops, Open Studios, group & solo shows, internships and visiting artist programs. |
